Knoxweb are the computer technology guru’s and are known for sharing interesting content about what’s going on in the web world, but this week, in celebration of the most romantic day of the year, the team from Knoxweb thought it would be fun to share some interesting fun facts about Valentine’s Day.

  1. Those candy hearts that you love so much are popular about 8 million made every year. In fact, there are enough made annually to stretch from Arizona to Rome and back.
  2. Originally a day that was introduced to celebrate the Saint Valentinus, he performed nuptials for the soldiers who were forbidden to marry. The Saint actually wrote a letter, which is said to be the first Valentine, to his daughter. Delivered by a romantic jailer, the letter was signed, “From your Valentine.” Saint Valentinus was buried on the 14th of February.
  3. After St. Valentine was laid to rest, the daughter of the jailor who gave St. Valentine’s letter to her planted an almond tree in his honor. The tree with its pink blossoms that she planted near the Saints grave is still there symbolizing lasting love and friendship.
  4. The average amount a man will spend on his Valentine is $130.00. That is double what a woman will spend. However, women buy more Valentine’s Day cards, 85 percent more to be exact.
  5. Approximately 50 million bouquets of roses are sent on Valentine’s Day all over the world.
  6. Christmas Day is the most popular day of the year for sending cards, with Valentine’s Day coming in a close second.
  7. 73 percent of men buy flowers on the most romantic day of the year with women purchasing 27 percent.
  8. Wearing your heart on your sleeve really does have historical significance. During the middle ages, young folks would draw a girls or boys name from the bowl. The name that was picked would be worn on their sleeve for seven days.
  9. Everyone knows the story of Romeo and Juliet, but most aren’t aware that over 1,000 letters addressed to Juliet are sent to Verona where the young lovers from Shakespeare tragedy lived.
  10. Richard Cadbury is to blame for those delicious and rich Valentine’s Day chocolates. In the 19th century, Mr. Cadbury invented the heart shaped candy box.
  11. Alexander Graham Bell applied for the telephone patent on February 14, 1876.
  12. Everyone knows how popular Cupid is on Valentine’s Day, but did you know that Cupid was the son of Venus? Venus was the God of beauty and love.
  13. 16 percent of women will send flowers to themselves on Valentine’s Day.
  14. In 1537 King Henry the Eighth, the man responsible for executing his wives for being barren declared Valentine’s Day a holiday.
  15. People love their fur babies with about 10 million people buying Valentine’s gifts for their pets.
  16. During the Middle Ages superstition ran rife with people believing if you were single that you would marry the first person, of the opposite sex of course, that you met on February 14th.
