Are you Using Social Media Wisely?

social media

According to Knoxweb, Social Media has grown as quick as the cell phone craze, with neither one going away anytime soon, if at all. Of course, it will continue to grow and change, but will also be there.

Back in 2013, analysts were scratching their heads over the massive growth of unheard Social Media sites that literally exploded overnight. Knoxweb looked at those statistics and the top five social media sites that saw major increases in revenue and traffic, but how many of those sites are performing like they were, or even still around three years later?

Uber

What started as a brainstorming session after complaining about reliable transport back in 2008, Garrett Camp and Travis Kalanick built a mobile app for a reliable transportation service company that would help people get around when a taxi couldn’t be found. Starting with two black sedans in New York City, as a way to test the system, the team opened Uber in San Francisco and the rest, as they say, “Is history.” In December of 2013, Uber was worth a reported 62.5 billion.

Feedly

Feedly was created as a marketplace for, well, for marketers. If you haven’t heard of it, you’re not alone. After researching Feedly, it was discovered that the site was continually crashing back in 2014. Fast forward to today and the site is still active, but the blog hasn’t been updated since May of 2016. If that ever happened on Facebook, users would be in an uproar.

Pinterest

Pinterest truly is an overnight success story with traffic growing by 40 times back in 2011. Pew Research saw an increase in use between 2011 and 2012 to 286 percent. The social media app that is a virtual pinboard allows users to pin favorite recipes, fashion items, just about anything that you can think of with other Pinterest users sharing on other social media websites. Four years in the making, the key to success was built on social sharing. Social media certainly wasn’t an afterthought with the company building a community from the beginning. Pinterest is rapidly growing closing in on the third most popular, email, when it comes to sharing.

Firerock

Not a web-based company, but a HubSpot Firerock saw massive bursts in growth after upping its social media marketing strategy. The company manufactures masonry products and keeps an up to date blog. Firerock optimized on Pinterest and posts by geography focusing on visual content that shares well. Firerock increased its reach by over 300 percent with a related increase to website visits.

Human Rights

Political action committees and nonprofit organizations are among the top websites that used social media wisely with campaigns that garner worldwide support. The timeline of urgency in these types of campaigns makes people sign petitions while sharing and supporting at the same time.

Social media has certainly changed since 2013 and will continue to do so; however, knowing where to put your energy when it comes to social media can be difficult if you are not keeping up with the ever-changing landscape that is social media.

Sharing on Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest is great for business, but are you using other social media sites, such as Snapchat, the fastest growing social site in 2015, Instagram or even YouTube to your advantage?
